Creating a new character in The Beanut Lands system is done in several steps. Each of these decisions you make has a solid impact on your character’s mechanics and story.

Your species determines your biological capabilities and limitations. Thanks to the evolution of your ancestors’ survival, lifestyles, home Land(s), and historical cultures, your own physical existence will be affected by three or four major Species Features.

Within each Species are also several, physical Heritage groups that will only affect your character’s physical appearance and potential role-play aspects. Heritage choices may be suggested for you based on both your Species and Culture decisions. Your Heritage choice is purely for storytelling and may have narrative implications, but will not affect your characters stats, attributes, skills, or abilities.

More information on Species and Heritage groups can be found by following the link below.

Your culture explains the world you were either born or raised in. During your developmental life, the Land(s) you lived in, the people who surrounded you, and the traditions, holidays, education, diversity, and languages you’ve been exposed to will heavily influence your character’s experiences in the future. Most often, a character’s Culture has a heavy impact on your behaviors, beliefs, and ideologies as well.

More information can be found by following the link below.

These are choices a person made as they grew into adulthood, or whenever their major story began, determines their Origin. Most Origins account for a person’s education level, profession or vocation, reputation, and more. This sets them apart from the average person as the true mark of an Adventurer in the Beanut Lands.

More information can be found by following the link below.

After you have chosen your Species, Culture, and Origin, you will be granted starting Experience Points ( XP) that you can use to further customize your characters stats and features.. This stage is optional, as you can also use your starting XP to progress your character in the XP Web, which is what you will use during game play to continue leveling your character long-term.

Your character’s name is most heavily influenced by their Native Language(s) and Culture; however, characters who hold their biological heritage in high regard, come from families of different cultures, or take on new names related to their ancestral people may have traditional names from their Species as well. Please use the following page to see more information on the detailed lore of naming in The Beanut Lands.

Your image often impacts your social interactions and expectations, as well as your self-expression. Each part of your image is a combination of all the major choices that you have made for a character. Below you’ll find some of the most common Image influences:

Biological composition & anatomical processes
Potential body types (some species are more limited)
Natural skin, hair, and eye colors
Unique features & characteristics (wings, fangs, claws, etc…)

Identity & Self-affirming expressions
Clothing Style
Hairstyles
Tattoos & Artistic choices
Piercings & Body Modification
Accessories

Convenience influences from Professions, Skills, & Abilities
Learned influences from Education, Laws, and Authority Figures
Social influences from Relationships, Groups, and Factions

Your own choices with Growth Features may alter your character’s appearance
Preferences and requirements from your Ideologies (more below)
Individual appearance changes from story-based events (more below)

Ideologies are a purely narrative aspect of character creation that help you, as a player, to get into the mindset of your character for the purposes of immersive role-play. While they are a good tool to start a role-playing journey for new players, ideologies may also help veteran players to develop a consistent character identity, or to create a challenge by choosing one or more ideologies that you’ve never tried before.

The main system integration for Ideologies is with Global Faction Reputation. Many organizations, guilds, governments, and more will gather and operate around certain ideologies. Sharing these ideologies will likely allow a character to interact more favorably with like-minded individuals, while polarized ideologies will likely cause social rifts. Global Factions are groups that share fairly ubiquitous ideologies that can be found just about anywhere. Having Reputation Points with a Global Faction is a sign that your character better understands those people and their lifestyles enough not to make a fool out of themselves.
