Overview

Hunters of the Sizzling Sands

‎ ‎Many say that Canzians resemble the grassland and desert cats with whom they share their Land. Scholars and storytellers alike have posed many theories, including that ancient Ma Pakkura torgali brought their jungle cat companions into the western expanses, learning the ways of the sylvans of the west and magically alter themselves to be better hunters in the wide desert. Others say that it there was once a gradual and clear progression from torgali to Canzian, but because the Eruption of Danuvica split their homelands apart and irreversibly altered the dawi people who lived there, none of those tok descendants remain of the people who bridged the gap between the Sizzling Sands and the Old World. None of these can be proven, however, as the Canzians never developed their own unique language or records the way the lovalians did.

‎ ‎Regardless of the details, it is biologically accepted that the Canzians are a historical fracture tribe of the original, Primal Tok clans, who set out under the guidance of “The Great Mother,” looking for a new homeland after a period of turbulent times. Much like their lovalian brethren (who ventured north) the Canzians set out west and established themselves in the coastal regions of the “Sizzling Sands”, developing new talents and cultures starkly different from their shared ancestors. It is unclear whether this “Great Mother” was truly a real, historical figure, or if she was a rallying ideal meant to bolster the people in hard times. Either way, because their matriarchal cultures have drastically affected their physicality, no Canzian feature is so noticeable as the fact that males are incredibly small in comparison to females.

Tok Supergroup

While in modern times, the four distinct peoples of the Tok species are not quite as physically similar as they once were, scholars and historians have agreed that the Torgali, Canzians, Lovalians, and Dawi have all descended from a single ancestor, known as the Primal Tok.

Etymology

Khanzi (or Canzi in the Common tongue) comes from antiquated hinnish translations from the original KanTok dialect of the ancient Tok language, which has no official written form. It roughly translates to “group of people,” or more often, “clan.” In many native areas this is a regularly spoken suffix, but is rarely used without a more specific descriptor, such as “Kikhanzi” (Green Strider Clans) and “Alkhanzi” (Summit Clans). As the term became more widespread in the cooler world in reference to the merchants from the south, the -an was added inexplicably to become “Canzian.” As the broader Canzian term spread into the world, many native clans have entirely dropped the suffix –khanzi from their own clan names.
